You
owe it to yourself to experience the beauty, grandeur
and majestic serenity of these trees. They grow best in
dense groves on the alluvial flats alongside the streams
of coastal Northern California. These groves offer a timeless
beauty which results in part from the dramatic contrast
of elements such as the rough textured reddish bark of
the redwood trees, the delicate greenery of redwood foliage,
the lush carpet of sorrel, mosses and ferns on the forest
floor, sunlight filtering down over these colors and textures
in ever-changing patterns. The contrast also includes
the special silence of a redwood grove – a living
silence made up of many small sounds.
It remains a mystery why the redwoods grow so tall. The
trees can reach ages of 2,000 years.
Muir Woods is a National Monument location in California.
It is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
"This is the best tree-lovers monument
that could possibly be found in all the forests of the
world," declared conservationist John Muir when
describing the majestic coast redwoods of Muir Woods.
Muir Woods is located 12 miles north of
the Golden Gate Bridge. To get there, take Highway 101
to the Highway 1/ Muir Woods Exit. Follow the signs
to Muir Woods. Roads to the park are steep and winding.

is very limited and fills quickly on most days. RV parking
