Hearst San Simeon State Historical
Monument
Hearst Castle is located on California Highway One,
in San Luis Obispo County. It is approximately halfway
between San Francisco and Los Angeles.
La Cuesta Encantada, "The Enchanted
Hill" high above the ocean at San Simeon, was the
creation of William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia
Morgan. Their collaborated effort on the castle began
in 1919 and continued for nearly 30 years.
An informal hilltop campsite was transformed into the
world-famous Hearst Castle. The castle is comprised
of a 115-room main house plus guesthouses, pools, and
8 acres of cultivated gardens.
The main house itself, "La Casa Grande," is
a grand setting for Hearst's collection of European
antiques and art pieces. It was also a most fitting
site for hosting the many influential guests who stayed
at Hearst's 250,000-acre San Simeon ranch.
If you have not seen this magnificent property you
owe it to yourself to take at least one tour. It would
be a great thing to do if you are looking to go out
of town for the day. The ocean views from Highway One
are breathtaking. |
