Cupertino officially became Santa
Clara County's 13th City on October 10, 1955.Cupertino
is classified as a General Law City. Approximately 80%
of the cities of the State of California are similarly
empowered. There are five elected city officials - members
of the City Council - who are elected for overlapping
four-year terms. The offices of Mayor and Vice Mayor
are filled by election of the Councilpersons. Only the
Council may establish City policy. Ultimately it is
the Council is responsible to the people for the actions
of government.
